IndyCar Champion Alex Palou Slams ‘Fake’ Rumors of Audi F1 Switch
IndyCar standout dismisses “false” speculation about moving to Audi in F1
Alex Palou addresses recent claims suggesting he's a potential candidate for Audi
Alex Palou has denied rumors suggesting that he would switch to Formula 1 with Audi.
According to a report by the German publication AMuS, Palou is being considered for a move from IndyCar to join Audi in 2025, when the team will continue to operate under the name Sauber.
"It's all a fabrication. I understand you might not believe me, but I swear," Palau said to IndyStar.
"It's all a fabrication…"
"I haven't had any communication with Audi at all. None."
Palou emphasized that his manager has not engaged in any discussions with Audi.
"Absolutely not. I understand it might be hard to believe, but I haven't," he promised.
Palau became a more serious contender for Formula 1 following his initial IndyCar title win in 2021, with McLaren showing interest in recruiting him.
A conflict has arisen between Chip Ganassi Racing and McLaren.
In the midst of contract disagreements, the two parties reached an agreement allowing Palou to act as a test and reserve driver for McLaren, while continuing to compete for Chip Ganassi through the conclusion of 2023.
Palou and McLaren are currently engaged in a different legal battle, and the driver has parted ways with his previous management team, whom he claims were responsible for his brief interest in Formula 1.
Palau commented on the connection to Audi, stating, "I don't have much to say, but I'm not planning on leaving."
"I gave it a shot. I experienced a bit of it and enjoyed myself while learning along the way, but it didn't work out. I'm alright with that."
"I'm not anxiously following the news and reaching out with an email saying, 'Hey, I realize we haven't been in touch, but can we have a conversation?' I'm fine, really."
According to IndyStar, Palou's existing contract with Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar series includes an option that allows him to terminate the agreement.
An F1 team would need to pay Chip Ganassi Racing $1.5 million to obtain his services.
Palou has seen a departure of a past supporter from Audi's F1 team. Andreas Seidl, who was previously with McLaren F1, has recently stepped down from his role as Audi's CEO.
While the possibility for Palou to finally transition to F1 might be there in theory, it's uncertain if he actually desires to make the move.
He has won the IndyCar Championship twice and is currently on track to secure his third title this season.
Before transitioning to Audi in 2026, Sauber has secured Nico Hulkenberg from Haas for the upcoming season but still has one vacancy available. Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou, the current drivers, are potential candidates to remain with the team.
