Iconic Ferrari F1 Car Driven by Michael Schumacher to be Auctioned
2002 Formula 1 Vehicle Set for Sale
The Ferrari F2001b Formula 1 vehicle, piloted by Michael Schumacher at the beginning of the 2002 season, is set to be auctioned this week.
The F2001b chassis was a modified model of the vehicle that Schumacher used to win the 2001 championship, marking his fourth world title, as Ferrari continued developing its 2002 contender.
The frame competed in the first two events of the 2002 season.
Schumacher clinched victory in the first race of the year at the Australian Grand Prix driving the F2001b, finishing 18.6 seconds ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya in his Williams.
The German driver secured third place in the F2001b at the subsequent Malaysian Grand Prix, after achieving Ferrari's 150th pole position the previous day at Sepang.
Starting with the Brazilian Grand Prix in the third round, the F2001b was swapped out for the F2002. Schumacher then secured victory in 10 races and took second place in the others, ultimately earning his fifth world championship.
Schumacher and Ferrari were so dominant that year that he secured the championship at the French Grand Prix in July, with six races still remaining in the season.
The F2001b, specifically chassis number 215, is set to be auctioned during Sotheby’s Sealed event at Monterey Car Week in California, slated for August 16-19.
The car's price remains undisclosed, but a Schumacher-driven F2002 chassis fetched £5 million in 2019.
In a more recent event, the F2003-GA, the car that Schumacher piloted to clinch his sixth world championship, making him the most decorated F1 driver in history at that point, was auctioned off for £13 million during Sotheby’s Luxury Week sale held in Geneva in 2022.
Several Schumacher Ferrari cars have been auctioned, including an F2001 model that fetched £5.5 million in 2017 and an F300 from 1998 that was sold for £5.3 million in 2022.
