The MP-4 21 was piloted by Lewis Hamilton and crafted by Adrian Newey.
Sotheby's hosted an auction on Friday, where the item was listed with an estimated price range of £2.2 million to £2.7 million, as reported by Top Gear.
The MP-4 21 became one of the initial Formula 1 vehicles trialed by Hamilton when he was just 21 years old.
This marked the culmination of Newey's exceptional career in car design with McLaren, delivering his ultimate project in his last year at the company.
Juan Pablo Montoya took the wheel for the initial three Grand Prix races of the 2006 Formula 1 season.
This marked the debut of a McLaren equipped with a Mercedes-Benz FO108S 2.4-liter V-8 engine that was naturally aspirated.
Chassis number 21A-03 has been refurbished to its original working condition, keeping its motor, transmission system, integrated computer, and steering mechanism intact.
The uniqueness of this auctioned vehicle lies in the fact that it's rare for a Formula 1 car driven by Hamilton to be found outside of an official manufacturer's collection.
In 2007, a year after the events mentioned, Hamilton secured his inaugural Formula 1 title. The MP-4 21 vehicle contributed to this significant achievement, serving as an initial testing vehicle for the iconic racer.
The bidding started several days back, indicating that an individual with at least a million dollars to spare is about to become the ecstatic new possessor of the McLaren MP-4 21.
