High Stakes and Hard Lessons: Oscar Piastri Reflects on McLaren’s Pit Stop Misstep at Silverstone
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri faces harsh reality with "own it from the cockpit" remark
David Coulthard confronts Oscar Piastri with a challenging question
David Coulthard inquired if Oscar Piastri should have gone against McLaren's pit stop plan during the British Grand Prix in Formula 1.
Lando Norris, who was ahead at Silverstone, lost his lead due to a poorly timed pit stop during fluctuating weather, enabling Lewis Hamilton to perform an undercut and secure victory.
Norris secured the third position, finishing just ahead of Piastri, who was also impacted by a strategy that puzzled Red Bull's leader, Christian Horner.
In an interview with Channel 4, Piastri expressed his frustration, stating, "Lately, there have been too many weekends where we leave thinking we could have secured a victory, both for my team and my teammate's."
"We got many things right. However, the crucial decision we needed to nail? We missed it."
"Making this choice is the most challenging task for an F1 team. With their cars running first and second, just half a second apart, and rain on the way, the team must decide whether to have both cars pit, keep one on the track, or have both stay out."
“There’s no situation more intense than this.
"We acted too slowly. Opting for double stacking would have been the smarter decision."
Piastri remarked, "For me, it was still manageable to be on slick tires. However, staying out for an additional lap made the conditions deteriorate."
The Australian driver was informed that McLaren would have secured the top two positions at Silverstone if they had opted for a double stack strategy.
“I understand, it’s painful,” he responded.
"At that moment, I realized I was going to waste a significant amount of time."
"It’s evident that my decision to stay out cost me significantly more time."
Piastri commented, "If I had one more lap, I might have taken the lead in the race. That could have altered the timing of my pit stop decision."
"The outcome is hard to accept."
Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard remarked to Piastri, “This reminds me of my time with McLaren during the British Grand Prix many years ago.”
"I lost the order during the pit stops and ended up making four or five of them."
"I was uncertain. I paid attention to the team because I believed they understood the situation better."
"The takeaway for me was that you need to take control from the pilot's seat when facing fluctuating conditions."
In response to Coulthard, Piastri stated, "I was informed that Max Verstappen had a higher speed. In the end, the team is aware of the exact difference in speed, but I am not."
"I had to focus intensely to take the lead. I was aware that if I managed to get ahead, I could make a pit stop on that lap before anyone else."
"The team is also thinking about that. They need to decide which car should enter the pit lane first."
"The condition of the track deteriorated significantly within just 30 seconds. Observing from the cockpit, it’s quite challenging."
"When you're in that situation, you tend to overestimate your courage, thinking you can remain on the track longer than you actually can."
“For my team and me, there were lessons learned to avoid making that mistake again in the future.”
