Helmut Marko Reveals Alleged Release Clause in Carlos Sainz’s Williams F1 Contract Amidst Vowles’ Secrecy Claims
Helmut Marko suggests Carlos Sainz possesses an exit option in his Williams deal
"It seems there's a specific provision in his agreement…"
Helmut Marko, an advisor for Red Bull, has alleged that Carlos Sainz's contract with Williams F1 contains a confidential exit provision.
Last week, it was revealed by Williams that Sainz will be moving from Ferrari to join their team for a minimum of two years.
This decision concluded the prolonged period of rumors regarding Sainz's career prospects and its broader effects on the racing driver landscape.
Sainz hesitated to make any agreements with other teams in the midfield, opting to wait and observe the developments at Red Bull and Mercedes.
Ultimately, Williams succeeded in securing the significant achievement of bringing on board the grand prix champion.
Evaluating Sainz's switch to Williams, he mentioned to Speedweek, "It makes sense that Carlos chose Williams, given what other options did he really have?
"Audi is unlikely to be among them next year, considering their achievements. Regarding Alpine, it's uncertain if they will secure the Mercedes engine in 2025 or have to wait until 2026. In his circumstances, that seemed like the optimal choice for him.
"Undoubtedly, it's heartbreaking that during his peak season with Ferrari, he's unable to secure a position in a leading team. However, there's potential for progress at Williams, where he also has access to a powerful engine."
Marko asserts that Sainz's contract with Williams contains a provision enabling him to exit should a more competitively positioned team make an offer.
He also mentioned, "It seems there's a provision in his contract that permits his departure should a significantly higher-ranked team make an offer."
Marko's proposal conflicts with the stance of William's leader, James Vowles.
Vowles emphasized that knowledge about the contents of Sainz's contract is restricted to a select few, and any circulating rumors, including those about a potential exit clause, are purely speculative.
"Only 10 individuals globally are privy to the details contained within the contract," Vowles revealed to journalists, including those from Crash.net, in an online press briefing last week.
"The team around Carlos, as well as myself, are aware of the contents. Whatever you've encountered online is merely conjecture, nothing more."
