Damon Hill Issues Caution to Sergio Perez on Red Bull Stability Amid Past Surprises
Damon Hill cautions Sergio Perez about potential unpredictability at Red Bull F1, referencing historical instances
"Hill highlighted previous instances where commitments were made – to drivers like Gasly or Albon – only for those situations to swiftly evolve."
1996 Formula 1 champion Damon Hill has cautioned Sergio Perez that his position at Red Bull may not be guaranteed even though he has held onto his spot past the summer break.
Following a critical meeting last Monday after the Belgian Grand Prix, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko concluded that Perez will continue to partner with Max Verstappen for the coming period.
Perez has been struggling lately, amassing only 28 points over his past eight races.
His performance has put Red Bull in a precarious position leading the constructors' championship.
For the time being, Perez will keep his position, but following the Singapore Grand Prix, Red Bull will get another chance to consider a replacement during the subsequent break.
On the F1 Nation Podcast, Hill mentioned the tenures of Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly with the team, noting that they received public support prior to their eventual replacement.
"Hill mentioned that it's crucial for them to dedicate more attention to Checo, aiming to identify and solve the issue at hand so he can maximize his performance with the vehicle."
"He's capable of gaining the assurance, or whatever it might be, that's required. They rely on him; replacing him with a different driver isn't an option."
Historically, there have been moments when a statement was made – whether by Gasly, Albon, or someone else – and then, unexpectedly, the situation shifted rapidly.
"Events unfold. Perhaps they'll come to terms with the possibility of not winning the team championship, questioning its monetary value to them. If they decide to invest millions into a new direction, it could prove beneficial over time."
Heading into this month's Dutch Grand Prix, Red Bull has a 42-point lead over McLaren.
Perez has yet to secure a top-three finish at Zandvoort across his three previous attempts with Red Bull.
