Helmut Marko Criticizes Sergio Perez for ‘Complete Collapse’ at Belgian GP as Red Bull Reviews His Future
Helmut Marko has said that Sergio Perez "totally fell apart" during the Belgian Grand Prix. Marko expressed his disapproval of Perez's showing at the Formula 1 event in Belgium.
Helmut Marko, the motorsport advisor for Red Bull, stated that Sergio Perez "totally fell apart" during the F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Perez had his best qualifying performance since the Chinese Grand Prix in April at Spa-Francorchamps and secured the second starting position for Sunday's race. Meanwhile, his teammate Max Verstappen was moved down to 11th place because of an engine-related penalty.
The Mexican driver, facing significant pressure, failed to take advantage of his front-row starting spot and eventually fell to eighth place. By the end of the 44-lap race, he was three positions behind his teammate, who was making a comeback. Perez was later moved up to seventh place after George Russell was disqualified.
Marko expressed his disappointment with the performance, telling Sky Germany that Sergio had a chance to secure a strong finish from second position. However, he didn't manage to achieve that. In particular, during the final phase of the race, Sergio's performance deteriorated significantly, recording lap times of 1 minute and 48 seconds.
"The promising results from qualifying sadly didn't come to fruition during the race."
Red Bull plans to have a meeting on Monday where Perez's future will be discussed.
Marko stated that the current circumstances will allow them to review the overall scenario for the year 2025. He mentioned that they have several drivers and a strategic plan in place.
"Naturally, every outcome matters to Sergio, and finishing in eighth [seventh] place after starting second on the grid definitely wasn't what we had anticipated."
Perez admitted he had a "very disappointing race" after not placing above seventh since the Miami Grand Prix, which took place nine races ago.
"It began positively, but I encountered significant difficulties on the straightaways," he said. "I'm not sure what the issue was, but I had to conserve battery power during the initial laps, which made me quite slow on the straights. Once I resolved that and recharged the battery, I was able to maintain my position."
"Switching to medium tires for the second part of the race, while having to deal with all the traffic behind, made things extremely challenging and complicated."
"We had a brief run and were out of rhythm. I believe our performance with the tyres was poor today. The balance was also off, so we have a lot to review on our end."
"Saturday was a positive day for me with a strong qualifying performance. However, this doesn't alter our situation. Our team is dealing with numerous issues that require our attention, and we can't afford to spend any energy on unfounded rumors."
"This will be the final occasion I discuss what lies ahead. To avoid any confusion, I want to state that I won't be addressing this topic further. I won't be responding to any future-related inquiries from now on."
