Helmut Marko Criticizes F1 Rivals for Blocking Young Talent: Calls for More Opportunities for Junior Drivers
Helmut Marko criticizes other F1 teams for being ‘scared of giving opportunities to young drivers.’
"They hinder the progress of young talent. Teams are also fearful of junior drivers."
Helmut Marko, who serves as an advisor for the Red Bull Formula 1 team, has criticized competitor teams for their lack of support towards young drivers.
Marko has overseen Red Bull's young driver program for more than ten years.
He played a key role in introducing Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen to Formula 1, as well as Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon.
In his column for Speedweek, Marko openly criticized competing F1 teams and several current drivers, though he did not specify any names.
Marko wrote that Oliver Bearman found himself in the perfect situation and will be advancing to Formula 1 next year.
"His performance with Ferrari has highlighted his potential in Formula 1, though his Formula 2 track record might suggest otherwise. Nonetheless, I fully support the influx of young talent into Formula 1."
"I can't disclose any specific names, but there are some drivers who don't show much improvement and their performance fluctuates with their mood."
"They hinder opportunities for young drivers. The teams also hesitate to take on junior drivers. While it's true that they make errors, I'd prefer to see someone learn from mistakes and show potential for the future rather than stagnate without progress."
Regarding Red Bull, they have Liam Lawson on standby, and Isack Hadjar has shown strong performances in Formula 2.
In Formula 3, Arvid Lindblad is trailing by six points after the most recent race at Silverstone.
Marko has announced plans to spend the summer break evaluating the performance of the Red Bull junior team.
Marko mentioned that they plan to thoroughly examine and assess the performance of the Red Bull junior drivers over the summer break.
Hadjar climbed to the top of the F2 rankings after his win in the main race at Silverstone. It's important to remember, however, that he faced several instances of bad luck, including an engine failure, issues with a backup engine, two fuel supply malfunctions, and being spun out of the race twice without any fault of his own.
“If it weren't for certain factors, he would have had a significant lead in the championship. Lindblad displayed exceptional talent in Formula 3, making an impressive jump from Formula 4 as a newcomer and securing victory in both races. At just 16, we are thrilled that he will have the opportunity to compete in Formula 1 again when he turns 17.”
"We're maintaining our composure and consistently achieving impressive outcomes with our junior drivers. They are now receiving more attention and have the opportunity to drive Formula 1 cars. Isack performed admirably in his latest test, even though he didn't use soft tires, he still delivered excellent results."
Isack and Arvid possess exceptional abilities; they are incredibly fast and have the skill level of Formula 1 drivers. We also shouldn't overlook Ayumu Iwasa, who is currently holding the second position in Japan's Super Formula series.
