Helmut Marko Attributes Sergio Perez’s F1 Qualifying Woes to Psychological Factors After Canadian Grand Prix Setback
Helmut Marko suggests that Sergio Perez's recent difficulties in F1 are due to "psychological" reasons following his latest early elimination in Q1.
Helmut Marko, an advisor for Red Bull motorsport, believes that Sergio Perez's recent difficulties in Formula 1 are due to psychological issues rather than problems with the car.
For the second race in a row, Perez was eliminated in the initial qualifying round, securing just the 16th spot on the starting grid for the Canadian Grand Prix.
This follows his earlier elimination in Q1 during the Monaco round.
The Mexican driver, who has recently renewed his contract with Red Bull for another two seasons, has not qualified within the top-10 since the Miami Grand Prix, which took place three races ago.
Before experiencing a decline in performance, Perez had begun each of the initial six races from a position within the top six.
Max Verstappen, his teammate, secured the second position in qualifying, narrowly missing out on pole position to Mercedes driver George Russell, despite both posting the same lap times.
"It's not about the car, as you can observe with Max. I believe the issue is more psychological," Marko mentioned to ServusTV.
"He barely made it, and when the situation shifts, he struggles a lot more. However, it's tough to handle that this is already the third time he's missed out on reaching Q3."
Perez appeared poised to advance to Q2, but his hopes were dashed when Alex Albon managed to improve his performance in his Williams car just as Q1 concluded, knocking Perez out of the qualifying round.
Perez confessed that he struggled to make his tires function properly and described his qualifying session as a "complete catastrophe."
"The primary problem was with the back end, specifically the rear axle," Perez mentioned to F1TV. "It seemed to be slightly more problematic."
"It felt quite unusual for many drivers on the track. In my case, I struggled to get the tires to perform properly. It took some time for the tires to reach their optimal performance."
"It was an absolute catastrophe. I believe that towards the conclusion, I simply couldn't manage to complete a decent lap."
