Guenther Steiner’s Verdict: Christian Horner Takes the Crown as F1’s Most Annoying Rival
Guenther Steiner discusses which former rival, Toto Wolff or Christian Horner, he finds more "irritating."
Toto Wolff and Christian Horner have both experienced several periods of leading success in Formula 1.
The competition between Mercedes and Red Bull, along with the verbal sparring between their team leaders, was vividly portrayed in Netflix's Drive To Survive and remains ongoing.
During an episode of the Red Flags podcast, Guenther Steiner was questioned about who he found more annoying during their successful times: Wolff or Horner.
Steiner reflected on the situation: "Who was more bothersome at the top?" He concluded, "I'd say Christian! There was just too much drama involved."
"There was never any real tension with Toto; he would say, 'We're winning because we're the best!'"
Red Bull achieved four consecutive championships with Sebastian Vettel, and now Max Verstappen is competing for his fourth straight title this season.
Mercedes played a crucial role in Lewis Hamilton's rise to becoming the most successful driver in Formula 1 history, a legacy that shifted during the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Steiner has mocked Mercedes for attributing their latest issues to the tyres.
Following a stretch where they secured victories in three out of four grand prix races, they have now fallen behind McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari once more.
"They're not exactly performing well," Steiner remarked. "They seem somewhat unsure about their actions."
George consistently remarks that "the tire isn't functioning properly."
"If your vehicle isn't in good condition, the tires won't function properly! I apologize."
"I've been there previously, so this isn't unfamiliar to me."
"If you're unsure about who to hold accountable, just point the finger at Pirelli! It's simple!"
"There were a handful of races where they performed exceptionally well, which caught me off guard. However, they soon fell short once more."
"It's quite unpredictable."
'Ferrari to Influence Championship Outcome'
Steiner noted that Mercedes' fluctuating performance is similar to Ferrari's.
"It's somewhat comparable to Ferraris, as they exhibit a similar trend," he mentioned.
During the race in Singapore, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc made errors that prevented them from securing spots on the podium.
"Ferrari will determine who becomes the drivers' champion."
"The focus is on how many points they can take away from Max."
"Therefore, Zak Brown should maintain a friendly relationship with Fred Vasseur rather than Christian Horner, as Fred is the one who provides him with assistance."
"McLaren's performance in Singapore was impressive. Zak has a talent for earning admiration. He maintains a good relationship with Christian."
"Yet, he'll manage to take the championship without anyone realizing."
McLaren is at the top of the constructors' standings, while Lando Norris trails Max Verstappen by 52 points in the drivers' championship.
