**Guenther Steiner Advises Against Mick Schumacher for Alpine: “You Need the Best Driver”**
Guenther Steiner advises Alpine against bringing Mick Schumacher on board for the 2025 season alongside Pierre Gasly, stating that they should prioritize securing the best driver available.
Guenther Steiner, who previously led the Haas F1 team, has recommended that Alpine refrain from signing Mick Schumacher as a potential successor to Esteban Ocon.
On Monday, Alpine revealed that they will "part ways" with Ocon after the season concludes.
Numerous individuals have been associated with the open position, among them is the young driver Jack Doohan.
Sauber's Valtteri Bottas has been considered as well, whereas Schumacher, now competing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, is a less likely option for the position.
Schumacher was a driver for Steiner's team at Haas for two years before being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg.
The duo experienced a contentious relationship, with Schumacher asserting that he lacked Steiner's complete backing.
Steiner became increasingly annoyed with Schumacher's numerous prominent crashes and the meddling presence of his entourage, especially through the German media.
In an interview on the Red Flags podcast, Steiner recommended that Alpine consider Carlos Sainz or Yuki Tsunoda for their team, and he ruled out the possibility of pairing Schumacher with Pierre Gasly.
"In that moment, no," he replied. "You have to choose the best driver available. I believe it's important to select those who have proven their skill. As a factory team, you must put in your utmost effort."
Regarding Ocon, there have been connections suggesting he might transfer to either Haas or Audi.
Steiner was queried about his opinion on Ocon following the French driver's incident with Gasly in Monaco.
"Of course, it crosses your mind; you definitely consider it, because it's just something you want to avoid," he mentioned.
"I often mention that teammates don't have to be close friends or dine together; however, mutual respect is essential. Ultimately, this principle extends beyond sports to life in general—respect for others is crucial."
"If you're not comfortable driving with this person on your team, you should leave. Personally, if I dislike being in a certain place, I leave. I'm not willing to cause trouble for the team over it."
"Someone should have spoken up and said, 'I can't be on the team with this person,' and another person should have recognized the issue. Everyone is aware of their past conflicts, and it seems even their parents had to keep them separated."
"That's not ideal when you're thinking, 'Oh, we'll be teammates now, everything's fine, despite having fought for the past 20 years, but now it's all good', you know?"
