What follows is an increasingly awkward dialogue between him and his cohost, who has a feminine voice—an intriguing yet somewhat deceptive demonstration of Google's NotebookLM technology and its venture into AI-generated podcasts.

Over the weekend, a recording of the discussion became a sensation on Reddit. In the comments, the person who shared it revealed they had programmed the NotebookLM tool to simulate a fake meltdown using AI vocalizations. Therefore, there's no evidence of AI gaining consciousness. Nevertheless, numerous technology journalists, TikTok users, and others are commending the authentic-sounding AI podcasts, which were created by submitting texts to the Audio Overviews function.

"The beauty of this instrument is that it offers individuals the chance to experience content they wouldn't normally stumble upon on platforms like YouTube or within available podcasts," explains Raiza Martin, the head of the NotebookLM project at Google Labs. Martin shares an instance where she fed a comprehensive 100-slide presentation on commercialization into the system and enjoyed an eight-minute condensed podcast version while engaging in other activities.

Launched for the first time a year ago, NotebookLM is a digital research helper equipped with standard AI tool functionalities, such as condensing documents. However, it's the Audio Overviews feature, which was made available in September, that has really grabbed the attention of web users. People are posting excerpts of their AI-generated podcasts derived from Goldman Sachs information releases and experimenting with the software's capabilities by performing antics, such as consistently submitting the terms "poop" and "fart." Exploring Audio Summaries is an exciting, cost-free AI tool worth experimenting with—you just need a Google account to get started. Simply log into your account and head over to the NotebookLM site. Then, initiate your project by clicking on the plus sign labeled New Notebook, and begin importing your content.

Every Notebook is capable of handling as many as 50 source documents, and these aren't limited to documents stored on your device. It's easy to bring in Google Docs and Slides. Additionally, you have the option to incorporate websites and YouTube videos, though there are some limitations to consider. For websites, only the textual content is subject to analysis, excluding any images or design elements, and the content must not be behind a paywall. Regarding YouTube, the Notebook will only utilize the video's text transcript, and the videos in question need to be accessible to the public.

Once you've added all your links and files, proceed to initiate the Notebook guide located at the screen's bottom right. Navigate to the section labeled Audio Overview and select the Generate option. Following this, be prepared to wait a bit as the loading time can vary based on the volume of source material included.

Once the AI podcast is produced by the tool, you have the ability to either generate a link for sharing the audio or directly download the file. Moreover, you can modify the speed of playback, allowing you to speed up or slow down the podcast as needed.

Exploring AI's Role in Podcast Creation

Innovators online have leveraged the audio capabilities of NotebookLM for a variety of inventive applications. They've crafted in-depth explorations on intricate tech subjects, developed audio summaries of comprehensive scholarly articles, and even fashioned personalized podcasts centered around their health and fitness journeys. This raises a pivotal query: Is it advisable to employ NotebookLM for processing your highly private documents?

According to Google's representative Justin Burr, the summaries created by NotebookLM are entirely based on the documents provided by users. This means that NotebookLM does not utilize your personal data for its training, ensuring that any confidential or sensitive content remains secure unless you decide to share it with others. Currently, Google presents NotebookLM as an "experimental" tool, suggesting that the company is primarily focused on collecting user feedback, making adjustments, and experimenting, without linking it to its massive advertising operations. At least, that's the situation for the moment.

Introducing audio capabilities to Google Labs' digital notebook marked a significant turning point. Martin notes, “Switching up how we interact with it opens up an array of new applications.” What distinguishes NotebookLM from the plethora of generative AI applications launched at consumers in 2024 is, quite unexpectedly, its use of natural speech patterns and unique expressions. Contrary to the dull, uniform narration often anticipated from dual AI voices synthesizing information, the rhythm and vocal delivery of NotebookLM’s artificial podcast hosts are noticeably smoother and more natural.

Are podcast creators truly at risk, worrying within their acoustically sealed studios? It doesn't seem so. Although AI podcasting solutions, such as those found in NotebookLM, may offer compelling and engaging content summaries for audiences, which is still uncertain, the unique parasocial relationships formed through hours of candid conversations by human podcast hosts, as their listeners tune in with keen interest, cannot be entirely replicated by artificial voices.

The Audio Summaries aren't designed to replicate the unique voice of a particular podcast host. Instead, they aim to embody the quintessential features of an archetypal pair of podcasters, marked by their casual utterances like "ums" and "ahs" and a conversational tone filled with pauses. "Right from the launch week, the future direction became evident," Martin comments. "Listeners are seeking control." The development team is keen on allowing users to customize the AI-generated content, including adjustments to the duration or the main themes of the podcast. Martin is optimistic about rolling out these enhancements swiftly.

Expanding the range of languages and including a variety of accents is a priority for her as well. Currently, the artificial presenters are designed to interact solely in English. However, the possibility of incorporating personal voices into NotebookLM podcast creations is not on the horizon just yet. According to Martin, the team must first determine the demand for such a feature and whether it can be implemented in a responsible manner.

The surging interest in NotebookLM's Audio Overviews via Google Labs, outside of its integration in the Gemini chatbot, underscores the uncertainty AI firms face regarding user preferences until their applications are actively used. For instance, OpenAI initially launched ChatGPT as a research project. Amid the ongoing flood of generative AI developments, it's not always the most promoted or practical features that grab the public's attention, but those that are the most amusing.
