In numerous instances, the victims were white while the offenders were of South Asian origin – a local investigation in Telford revealed that the abuse was overlooked due to apprehensions regarding racial issues.

The Jay inquiry did not evaluate the role of ethnicity in grooming gangs because of inadequate data, and it suggested creating a central national database on child sexual abuse that logs the ethnicity of both the victim and the accused.

Ms. Harman's remarks follow an assertion by Andy Burnham, the Labour Metro Mayor of Greater Manchester, who suggested that there might be grounds for a new "limited national inquiry."

Heads of prominent retail chains are spearheading an initiative to reduce criminal activity and help former inmates secure steady employment.

This initiative is a government effort to establish 11 new regional employment councils throughout England and Wales.

Executives from companies such as the Co-Op, Iceland, Greggs, and Oliver Bonas will take on advisory positions voluntarily, working alongside probation services, job centers, and the Department for Work and Pensions.

The concept aims to assist former inmates in securing employment as they complete their sentences within the community.

According to government statements, around 80% of crimes are committed by repeat offenders. Recent statistics indicate that individuals who remain jobless six weeks after being released from prison are twice as likely to reoffend compared to those who have found employment, with rates of 35% versus 17%.

The newly established employment councils will augment the efforts of the current job advisory panels, which were initiated by the previous CEO of Timpsons, who is now the minister for prisons, Lord Timpson.

Advisory panels include community leaders in 93 separate detention facilities to offer guidance on education and training, though their influence generally does not extend beyond the confines of the jail.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Eluned Morgan criticized HS2 for being "unfair" and expressed her anticipation for improvements in rail infrastructure and funding.

A source from the UK government indicated that upcoming announcements regarding transportation policies in Wales are expected soon, emphasizing that this matter will be a focal point in the upcoming spring budget review.

According to the source, the government is taking steps to address the longstanding issue of insufficient funding for Welsh rail, which has been worsened by the HS2 project.

The premier expressed her desire for increased financial support prior to the upcoming Senedd elections in May, although it remains uncertain how much funding Sir Keir Starmer intends to allocate to his associates in Wales.

The previous Conservative administration had classified the HS2 project, which has no scheduled routes passing through Wales, as a venture shared between England and Wales.

This implied that Wales did not receive any financial support, unlike the regional administrations in Scotland and Northern Ireland, which were allocated extra funds despite not participating in the project.

Every political group in the Welsh Parliament has united in demanding additional funds for the HS2 project for Wales.

In her initial conversation with Sky News since assuming her role, Ms. Morgan described the existing circumstances as "completely inappropriate, inequitable, and unwarranted."

She stated, "It's essential that we receive our portion of the funds. Our portion has not been allocated to us yet."

Educators have been advised that "now is not the appropriate moment for a strike," following the announcement by the biggest teachers' union of its intention to encourage its members to decline the government's proposed salary increase.

The National Education Union (NEU) is set to begin a preliminary vote among its members from March 1 to April 11 regarding the government's proposed 2.8% salary increase for teachers in England.

In a conversation with Anna Jones on Sky News Breakfast, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy appealed to teachers to refrain from striking, stating that the current Labour administration has implemented "more measures than the Conservative government did over the past 14 years."

Addressing educators, she stated, "I understand that recent years have been extremely challenging, but I encourage you to consider that within just six months, we have implemented more measures than the Conservative government did in the past 14 years.

"We have presented a salary proposal to enhance their quality of life."

"Furthermore, in discussions with educators nationwide, including those at my own child’s school, the prevailing sentiment is a desire to alleviate the burdens on teachers. This would enable them to focus primarily on their fundamental role of instruction, and attend to the needs of their students, especially those from the post-COVID generation who face numerous obstacles."

"I want to acknowledge the challenges our educators have faced and emphasize the importance of collaboration for the benefit of our students. Together, I believe we can find effective solutions."

The possibility of teacher strikes looms following the government's proposal of a 2.8% salary increase for public sector employees, a figure that has faced criticism from some NHS workers.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) described the amount as "barely £2 more per day" and called on the government to initiate discussions to "prevent additional disturbances and votes."

In September of last year, the Aslef union, representing train drivers, agreed to the government's proposal, which included a retroactive salary increase of 5% for 2022-23, followed by raises of 4.75% for 2023-24 and 4.5% for 2024-25.

Members of the RMT union, which advocates for rail employees, agreed to a one-year wage increase of 4.5% at Network Rail. Additionally, they secured raises at train operating companies, with a 4.75% increase for the previous year and a 4.5% raise for the years 2024/25.

In September of the previous year, educators and principals across England were granted a 5.5% salary increase.

Daniel Kebede, the chief of the NEU, has stated that the government's proposed 2.8% increase for the 2025/26 period falls short of what is needed to tackle the lack of teachers.

"He stated that the proposed 2.8% increase falls short of what is needed to begin tackling the recruitment and retention crisis."

The idea that a pay increase without allocated funds can be covered through 'efficiencies' is offensive to a profession that has already suffered through 14 years of budget cuts.

"No educator or manager can pinpoint areas to optimize without reducing personnel, resources, or both."

He stated: "Numerous educators supported the educational reforms that the Labour Party pledged. They committed to funding education, hiring 6,500 new teachers, prioritizing educational quality, and enhancing the future prospects of our children."

"It's essential that their dedication is evident in actions, not just in statements.

"Simply relying on feelings won't address the significant shortage of teachers, nor will it ensure the top-tier education that our children need."

The Department for Education (DfE) sharply criticized the union's choice, labeling it as "extraordinary." Similarly, officials from Downing Street appealed to teachers not to jeopardize students' education by participating in strikes.

The Department for Education stated that an increase of 2.8% in salaries would "preserve the attractiveness of teachers' compensation in the face of the difficult economic conditions confronting the government."

A spokesperson from the Department for Education commented, "This decision is remarkable.

Over the past three years, educators have received a total salary raise exceeding 17%.

"Amid ongoing efforts by schools and families to boost attendance, following the significant number of school days missed due to the pandemic and recent strikes, it's crucial for union leaders to carefully consider whose priorities they are truly serving."

A Sikh organization has expressed its disappointment following the Labour Party's decision not to initiate an investigation into possible connections between the UK and the killing of numerous Sikhs at the Golden Temple in India in 1984.

According to a document obtained by Sky News, the Sikh Federation has informed Foreign Secretary David Lammy that they have reached out to him five times since the Labour Party assumed power, without receiving any responses.

In 2022, Sir Keir Starmer sent a letter to the Sikh community pledging that a Labour-led government would initiate an independent investigation into the UK's military involvement in the 1984 assault by the Indian army on the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

By 1984, there was growing support for the creation of an independent Sikh nation, a movement that ultimately escalated into violence.

The government responded to this armed rebellion with a harsh crackdown.

In 2014, it inadvertently came to light that the UK government might have had connections to the assault on the Golden Temple.

Operation Blue Star

In June 1984, during Operation Blue Star, Indian military units entered the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the most sacred site in Sikhism, to remove separatists who were holed up inside.

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a prominent Sikh leader known for his militant activism and support for an independent Sikh homeland, was among the many fatalities. Sikh organizations contend that the actual death toll reached into the thousands.

Several months after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi authorized an assault on the temple, she was killed by two of her Sikh bodyguards, who were seeking retribution.

In 2014, unintentionally disclosed documents revealed that Margaret Thatcher knew about plans by the Indian government to storm the temple, and in the lead-up to the assault, an officer from the British SAS had offered guidance to India.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron requested that civil servant Jeremy Heywood carry out an inquiry.

Mr. Cameron subsequently stated, "Approximately four months prior to the incident, following a request from the Indian government, a UK military officer offered some guidance. However, it's important to note that this guidance was not adhered to, and the incident was isolated."

He further stated, "There is absolutely no proof that the UK government participated directly in the operation."

Accusation of concealment

The Sikh Federation has previously charged the government with concealing information and has been demanding an inquiry led by a judge.

In a letter addressed to David Lammy on Friday, Dabinderjit Singh, the chief executive of the Sikh Federation, expressed his concern stating, "Labour has held power for more than six months, yet there has been complete silence" regarding the investigation "that Labour has pledged to initiate for the past decade."

He further emphasized that even though they have dispatched five letters to Mr. Lammy, there has been no preliminary response regarding the potential inquiry, which, according to guidelines, should have been provided.

The request for an investigation followed a call from Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, the Labour MP and chair of the defence select committee, who also expressed the need for one.

Lucy Powell, the Labour leader in the House of Commons, stated, "It's crucial that we fully understand the situation, and I will make sure that the relevant Ministers communicate with him to delve deeper into this issue."
