George Russell’s Pirelli Complaints Slammed as ‘Complete Nonsense’ by Ex-F1 Manager Peter Windsor
George Russell's criticisms about Pirelli tyres in Azerbaijan have been dismissed as "utterly baseless."
"If there were issues, it would be evident throughout the entire pitlane. However, it's not happening at McLaren. Isn't that curious?"
Ex-Formula 1 team boss Peter Windsor has criticized George Russell's grievances about Pirelli tires, calling them "utterly baseless."
After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Russell openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the Pirelli tyres' erratic performance.
According to Russell, Mercedes struggled with the medium tires during the first half of the race but demonstrated a race-winning capability after changing to the hard tires.
Following the race, Russell urged for "important discussions" with Pirelli, stating that the circumstances were "unsatisfactory".
Nevertheless, Windsor, a former team manager for Williams and Ferrari, argues that Russell's theory doesn't hold up because of McLaren's consistent performance.
During an episode of The F1 Hour podcast, Windsor expressed his opinion, stating, "I believe the idea of a tyre lottery is utterly ridiculous. If there were significant variations between different sets of soft tyres or medium tyres, that would be a different matter."
"It would be appearing all over the pitlane. However, it's not appearing at McLaren. I find that curious."
“It might be by small amounts, but it’s not any different from what you would have received from Bridgestone or Michelin.”
Russell faced criticism for his management of a yellow flag situation in Azerbaijan.
The Mercedes driver avoided a penalty for speeding during yellow flag conditions in the first qualifying session.
Windsor believes that Russell's actions were "risky" and that there's no need for him to demonstrate anything.
Windsor commented that it wasn't wise for George to proceed regardless.
"How is that clever? Honestly, it's just risky."
"George doesn't have to demonstrate his masculinity or courage; it's evident when he's behind the wheel of a race car."
Russell secured third place in Baku following a crash between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz on the second-to-last lap.
