George Russell Reveals Engine Fate Post-Silverstone, Mercedes Eyes Hat-Trick as Upgrades Fuel Resurgence
George Russell explains the outcome for the engine following his retirement at Silverstone, stating, "We've been at the forefront of the last four races since implementing the upgrades."
George Russell disclosed that Mercedes managed to preserve his engine even though he had to retire from the race at Silverstone.
A potential problem with the water system was identified as the reason for Russell's early exit from the previous F1 British Grand Prix.
He promptly informed Sky Sports that his steering wheel showed alerts indicating a problem with the water cooling system.
In anticipation of the upcoming F1 Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, where Crash.net is present in the paddock, Russell has elaborated on the aftermath of the incident.
He assured that the engine was intact, stating: “Luckily, the engine is still good and we will be using it.”
"Honestly, I believe we’ll stick with the same engine this weekend. It was merely a water leak; the engine wasn’t receiving sufficient water."
"The crew noticed by the second or third lap of the race that the temperatures were steadily rising and we were experiencing a loss of power."
“It was truly unfortunate, but as Lewis mentioned, we are currently in a strong position and we will continue to compete. I am certain that we will get another chance.”
Mercedes comes to Hungary after securing victories in the last two Formula 1 races, with Russell winning in Austria and Lewis Hamilton triumphing at Silverstone.
In the last four races, Mercedes has accumulated more points than any other team.
Russell mentioned that everyone is very thrilled about their much-anticipated improvement.
“If someone had said at the beginning of the year that we would be heading into Hungary with a chance to secure three consecutive victories, we would have found it hard to believe.
"We've been at the forefront in the last four races due to recent enhancements, marking an amazing improvement for our team. Everyone is extremely inspired."
“There are no certainties for the upcoming two race weekends. Reflecting on the past four races, it's clear that we had the fastest car during qualifying in two of them and the fastest car during the race in two others.
"However, in Austria and Barcelona, we were trailing Max and Lando by around 10 to 20 seconds, so we'll have to see how things turn out this weekend. Nonetheless, we're very enthusiastic about what's ahead."
"Max remains victorious in two of those races…"
While Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is no longer as dominant as he once was, he continues to hold a substantial lead in the F1 championship standings.
However, Formula 1 is now more competitive than it has been since Verstappen began his reign.
This year, grand prix victories have been claimed by both Mercedes drivers, both Ferrari drivers, and Lando Norris from McLaren.
“Max has taken a significant lead, while Lando is holding a steady second place,” commented Russell regarding the intense championship race.
“Our objective for the remainder of the year is to aim for victory in as many races as we can.”
"Naturally, we've significantly narrowed this gap. Out of the last four races, we've had two excellent performances. However, Max has still managed to secure victory in two of those races, came in second in another, and was on track to finish second in Austria."
"They've been performing quite well recently, so we're definitely closer than we've ever been. We just need to see how things go this race weekend and at Spa. If we have two strong race weekends here, I believe we'll be competitive everywhere."
Russell pointed out the critical factors behind Mercedes' resurgence: "We introduced a moderately sized update in Montreal, but it had a much larger impact on our lap times than expected."
"I believe that with the current handling of the car, we both feel much more assured and can drive it nearer to its maximum capacity."
“The tires are now performing better during the race, making it easier for us to manage them.”
"The performance gains have snowballed, so this minor upgrade has significantly improved lap times. We can push the car harder now, which is crucial as it gives us more confidence."
He stated, "The most important thing is that we remained united as a team. Everyone supported each other."
"There haven't been any significant alterations in the structure of Mercedes. Credit must be given to Toto for having faith in his team and allowing them the opportunity to excel in their roles."
"In my opinion, this team stands out from many others in that aspect. Up to this point, it looks like we’ve handled it exceptionally well, and we’re just aiming to keep moving forward on this path."
