George Russell Reflects on Thrilling Duel with Lewis Hamilton at Canadian Grand Prix: ‘Racing One of the Greats
George Russell shares his thoughts on competing against Lewis Hamilton: “When you go up against one of the legends..”
George Russell discusses his experience racing against Lewis Hamilton during the Canadian Grand Prix.
George Russell expressed confidence in Lewis Hamilton's reliability during their close battle in the final laps of the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
Although Russell was leading his seasoned teammate for most of Sunday’s race, he fell behind Hamilton when he tried to pass McLaren’s Oscar Piastri at the last chicane.
Russell had to go off the track at the chicane, and because it was wet, he lost important time.
Nonetheless, Russell's faster speed and better tire condition allowed him to overtake Hamilton with a daring maneuver at the chicane.
Hamilton maintained his position in the center of the track, compelling Russell to veer to the right, where the racing line remained wet.
Russell briefly lost control in the corner because of the wet track, but he managed to hold his position and secure both his and Mercedes' first podium finish of the year.
During the FIA press conference after the race, Russell shared his thoughts on competing against the seven-time world champion, stating, “Racing with Lewis is always tough but fair."
"When competing against a top-tier racer, you have confidence in their reliability. Witnessing that at the finish was truly wonderful."
Mercedes had their best performance of the year this past weekend, with Russell securing the second pole position of his career.
Russell believed that if it weren't for several unforced mistakes, victory could have been within reach at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
He stated, "If you had informed us before the weekend that we would secure pole position and a third-place finish, we might not have believed it. However, as Max mentioned, the race conditions were extremely challenging for everyone."
"Being off by even a millimeter can make all the difference. Personally, I feel like I made one too many errors at crucial times, which ultimately prevented us from competing with the top two as the race concluded."
"I was advocating for a pit stop because I believed that switching to new Medium tires would provide a significant competitive edge towards the race's conclusion. In retrospect, I need to review this decision because, honestly, I think we demonstrated excellent speed. Were you both on Mediums? Yes, they were on Medium tires while I was on Hard tires. If we had all been on Mediums, I believe we would have been in a very strong position to contend. However, hindsight always offers a clearer view of what could have been done differently. Nonetheless, I am pleased with the progress we have achieved."
"The team’s efforts in implementing these upgrades have been impressive and are yielding great results."
