George Russell Predicts Potential 2026 F1 Sabbatical for Max Verstappen Amid Contract Exit Clauses and Rule Changes

George Russell mentioned that he wouldn't be shocked if Max Verstappen decided to take a surprising break from Formula 1 in 2026.

According to George Russell, he "wouldn't be shocked at all" if Max Verstappen chose to take a break in 2026 to evaluate his opportunities in Formula 1.

The future of Verstappen in Formula 1 has been a major point of discussion since the year began, especially in light of Red Bull's issues away from the track.

The Dutch driver has been strongly associated with a move to Mercedes, as Toto Wolff has openly expressed his interest in Verstappen.

Although Verstappen is under contract until 2028, it is believed that his agreement includes several exit clauses.

Another element to keep in mind is the upcoming regulations in 2026, which will mark the debut of Red Bull producing their own engine.

Mercedes has yet to determine who will team up with Russell in 2025 after Lewis Hamilton made the surprising choice to move to Ferrari.

Russell is willing to team up with Verstappen if Mercedes can secure the top driver in F1, although he hinted that the three-time world champion could consider taking a break.

Russell mentioned to the Daily Mail that he would not hesitate to compete directly with Max, and he would also welcome Max joining their team.

"I faced the immense challenge of joining Mercedes and competing against the statistically greatest driver ever, both in qualifying and during the race. I did my best against him, and that’s all I can do."

"Max could consider taking a break in 2026 to observe which team performs the best. It wouldn't shock me if he decided to do that. Keep in mind, 2026 is unpredictable. Therefore, it's impossible to foresee the outcomes."

In the middle of last year, Russell agreed to a long-term contract with Mercedes, ensuring his stay with the team at least through the end of 2025.

Since Russell became a part of the team in 2022, Mercedes' performance has regrettably declined, yet the British driver continues to be fully "loyal" to the team based in Brackley.

“I am a committed individual, and while Mercedes has provided me with an opportunity, my goal is to become a World Champion. Currently, that’s not where we stand,” he stated.

"Just a year ago, McLaren was the slowest team, but now they have become the fastest."
