George Russell Mystified by Mercedes’ Sudden Performance Drop at Dutch GP: ‘It Felt Like I Was on Ice

George Russell is puzzled after experiencing a strange slip during the F1 Dutch Grand Prix.
Russell secured the fourth spot in qualifying at Zandvoort and moved past McLaren’s Oscar Piastri at the beginning, positioning himself in third place. However, he ultimately fell to seventh after making an additional pit stop, a strategic risk that did not pay off.
Teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was making a comeback, crossed the finish line in eighth place, just a few seconds behind. Meanwhile, Russell was confused about the sudden decline in Mercedes' performance.
He expressed to Sky that he genuinely doesn't comprehend the events that have transpired.
"We lacked speed with all three types of tires and kept falling behind. Honestly, I'm not sure what happened. It was strange; we qualified in fourth place and were consistently trailing the three leading cars while staying well ahead of the Ferrari. But today, everything just fell apart."
"It seemed as though there was no traction; it felt like I was simply skidding everywhere, almost like being on ice. There's clearly an issue with the tyres, and we've certainly made a mistake somewhere, but at the moment, I'm quite puzzled about the exact cause."
Russell thinks that Mercedes' poor performance at Zandvoort is simply an anomaly and is optimistic that it won't turn into a consistent issue.
“We've participated in the past six races,” he mentioned. “This one is definitely unusual. Performance does vary depending on the track, but this seems particularly strange.”
“It’s peculiar that after winning three out of the last four races and competing strongly in Montreal and other locations, we ended up finishing so far behind the winner today. We need to investigate what happened. Today’s race was truly unusual.”
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff characterized his team's showing at the Dutch Grand Prix as "extremely tough."
“In the previous race weekend, you secured first and second places, but then ended up in seventh and eighth positions. This indicates that we made one or more mistakes in the car's performance setup,” he mentioned to the official F1 channel.
"It's quite painful, but occasionally, enduring the pain is necessary to take a significant leap forward."
