George Russell Credits Lewis Hamilton’s Telemetry for Canada Pole Success: A Mercedes Resurgence
"I needed to examine his data," George Russell stated, revealing that Lewis Hamilton's telemetry played a crucial role in securing pole position in Canada.
George Russell disclosed that he had to examine Lewis Hamilton's data during the third practice session because he was having difficulty maintaining speed at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Russell secured his second pole position in his Formula 1 career by finishing ahead of Max Verstappen, despite both drivers recording the same lap time.
It marked the culmination of an impressive comeback for Mercedes, who demonstrated exceptional speed during all practice sessions.
Hamilton set the fastest time, outpacing the competition by almost 0.4 seconds. This prompted Russell to examine the seven-time world champion's data to figure out how to improve his own speed.
Russell mentioned that earlier today, Lewis was incredibly fast and was significantly ahead of him.
"I thoroughly examined his data to grasp the unique approaches he was employing. Frankly, this was immensely beneficial to me."
"In anticipation of this qualifying event, I'm extremely happy that we managed to achieve it, as I believe our dedicated efforts truly merit this success."
"The car's performance has been incredible throughout the weekend."
Mercedes has had a challenging year up to this point, as the team has not secured a podium finish in 2024.
Russell was delighted to demonstrate that the efforts of the Mercedes team at their headquarters are now yielding positive results.
"This excitement is palpable," Russell commented. "It's been quite some time since we've felt this way."
“There is a significant amount of effort happening behind the scenes at Brackley and Brixworth, and it's taken some time to get back into the competition. At times, it seemed like all that hard work wasn't yielding results.”
Russell thinks that Mercedes is starting to discover the ideal setup for their car.
"We faced significant challenges with understeer previously," he stated. "In the previous year, we dealt with a lot of oversteer, and we've been attempting to strike a balance between the issues from last year and those we've encountered this year."
"It seems like we're finally hitting that perfect balance at the moment. Honestly, it feels like we've been talking about this for a while. But it's truly a relief to see it result in a pole position."
