George Russell Admits Lap 1 Error at Italian GP, Reflects on Unpredictable F1 Performance Trends
George Russell accepts responsibility for an expensive mistake on the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix. "I sustained some damage, I believe, in the following corner when I collided with Max. It's uncertain what might have happened otherwise."
George Russell has admitted that his expensive mistake during the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix was entirely his fault.
Russell experienced damage during the first lap of the Monza race while trying to get back on track after going off at Turn 1.
The Mercedes driver went into the run-off zone and came back onto the track near Max Verstappen.
Russell disclosed that he sustained damage at the subsequent corner after a slight collision with Verstappen, which later necessitated a front wing replacement.
Russell reflected on the initial lap at Monza, stating: "The first lap was primarily where I lost time. It was an error in judgment on my part."
Oscar appeared suddenly. He hit the brakes sooner than I had anticipated.
"When I responded and stepped on the brakes, the entire car started to skid. I had to steer away to avoid a collision. I believe I sustained some damage at the following corner with Max. It's hard to say what might have happened."
"However, I doubt we would have been able to match the pace of the McLarens. Charles was also very quick."
Regarding Mercedes' competitors, Ferrari had a successful weekend, with Charles Leclerc executing a remarkable one-stop strategy.
Russell admitted that predicting which teams will perform well in a race is a mystery to everyone.
"They had an amazing race," he mentioned. "On Sunday morning in Zandvoort, we talked to the Ferrari team. They seemed confused and unsure at that time, but they ended up finishing on the podium and then securing a victory here!"
"Red Bull's performance has significantly declined. I'm baffled by what's happening in Formula 1…"
"Those who are performing well and those who are not, nobody seems to understand the situation."
"We need to continue putting in effort and making progress. McLaren remains ahead of us."
