Fuming Ricciardo Awaits Apology After Strategy Blunder at Hungarian GP: ‘That Made Me Even More Angry
Daniel Ricciardo, feeling frustrated, is anticipating an acknowledgment of error with an apology. "That only increased my frustration…"
Daniel Ricciardo was visibly upset with his team following one of the most exasperating races he has ever experienced.
Ricciardo secured the ninth position in the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, hinting at a promising performance on Sunday. This could have increased the likelihood of Red Bull considering him as a replacement for the embattled Sergio Perez.
However, Red Bull decided to bring Ricciardo in for a pit stop early, after just seven laps on medium tires, a decision he did not agree with. He ended up finishing in 12th place.
During a radio communication with his team at the Hungaroring, he expressed his frustration, saying he was holding back his true feelings about the initial pit stop.
“We drove behind the safety cars,” Ricciardo mentioned.
"They've recently arrived. We have an unobstructed path, and we chose to follow them closely, positioning ourselves in a DRS slipstream."
"I've competed in numerous races, and many have been quite frustrating. However, that one is among the most frustrating."
"We had the speed and essentially handed Yuki the race that lay ahead. Both of us were capable of achieving it, but we didn't."
Ricciardo expressed his frustration over the poorly timed pitstop, saying, “Honestly, the moment I was heading into the pits, I was already doubting it. However, you can't…
"When you're summoned at Turn 13, you need to respond immediately."
"We discuss tactics, but two vehicles overtook us at the beginning using soft tires. That's okay, let them pass."
"They made a pit stop, and we followed suit to match their strategy. If we had stayed out, we would have had a clear track and an opportunity to replicate Yuki’s race, based on my understanding."
"To be frank, I anticipated a better outcome. During the cool-down lap, I was bracing myself to hear 'sorry, we messed up,' but that never happened."
"That intensified my anger."
Ricciardo is one of the primary contenders to replace Perez, who is currently facing criticism, at Red Bull.
Helmut Marko has confirmed that F1’s constructors' champions will meet during the summer break to determine if they will continue with Perez.
Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson are viable candidates if they decide to part ways with the Mexican driver.
This means Ricciardo has just one more opportunity to make an impression at the upcoming F1 Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.
