From Formula 1 to IndyCar: Angela Cullen’s Transformative Role with Marcus Armstrong
Angela Cullen praised as a "guiding force" by the new IndyCar driver under her training.
"She plays a crucial role in our daily routines. Calling her just a physio doesn't capture her full impact; she's so much more than that."
Marcus Armstrong has provided insights into Angela Cullen's influence, noting that he is the first driver she has coached after her tenure with Lewis Hamilton.
For seven years, Cullen and Hamilton were a constant presence at F1 grand prix events, until they went their separate ways last year.
Hamilton’s ex-physiotherapist has now rejoined the motorsports world, collaborating with Armstrong in the IndyCar paddock.
Armstrong shared with PA that he was rather astonished, stating, "Honestly, after dedicating several years to Formula 1, one would expect to step back from motorsport and take a breather."
“But it’s actually the reverse.
"Her enthusiasm for the sport is evident, and as we began to chat informally, we quickly connected and found that we shared a similar mindset."
Armstrong realized the importance of enhancing his physical condition for his debut full-time season in IndyCar and got connected with Cullen to work on it.
The partnership was established while they were both in their homeland of New Zealand.
"She possesses an immense amount of experience," stated Armstrong.
“She has witnessed championships being secured and has observed the winning techniques employed by Mercedes and others.
"Therefore, her presence provides inspiration, direction, and encouragement."
“We haven’t been collaborating for very long, and I can’t fathom how I handled competitions without her.
"She assists me in removing distractions initially, as this sport is filled with numerous interruptions."
"Our primary objective is to achieve high performance. If something doesn't contribute to that, we won't pursue it."
"She plays a crucial role in directing our daily activities."
"She's not just a physical therapist; she's much more than that."
“If it doesn't improve our lap times, we won't pursue it, straightforward.”
"We're still in the process of establishing ourselves and laying the groundwork."
“Our goal is to establish a consistent routine and a strong work ethic that will enable us to compete for race victories and championships over the long term.”
"It's comforting to know that she has witnessed championships being won before and believes this is the correct approach. We're on the right path."
