Franco Colapinto Replaces Logan Sargeant at Williams for Remainder of 2024 F1 Season
Franco Colapinto selected to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams for the remainder of 2024
Williams has selected Franco Colapinto to take over from Logan Sargeant for the rest of the 2024 season.
Williams has announced that Franco Colapinto will take over from Logan Sargeant for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season. This confirmation came on Tuesday.
Following a challenging 18-month stint in Formula 1, Sargeant is set to leave Williams, allowing Colapinto to make his F1 debut at the Italian Grand Prix.
Rumors about Sargeant's career intensified after he suffered a significant accident during the last practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Williams considered various alternatives, such as Red Bull's Liam Lawson, before ultimately choosing to promote Colapinto, a member of their driver academy.
The 21-year-old racer from Argentina has been participating in the FIA Formula 2 series this year and currently holds the sixth position in the standings, just ahead of Mercedes' young talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
In a statement about the news, Colapinto expressed his excitement, saying, "It's a privilege to debut in Formula 1 with Williams – it's a dream come true. The team boasts a remarkable history and has a clear goal of returning to the forefront, which I'm eager to contribute to. Joining F1 in the middle of the season will be a significant learning experience, but I'm ready for the challenge and committed to collaborating with Alex and the team to achieve success."
Team principal James Vowles acknowledged that the choice to substitute Sargeant was "extremely" difficult for the American.
The ex-Mercedes strategist believes this approach offers Williams the optimal opportunity to earn points.
Vowles stated: "Switching a driver during the season is a choice we have carefully considered, but we think this move offers Williams the strongest opportunity to vie for points as the season progresses."
