Ford Unveils the 2025 Expedition: A Mighty SUV with Split Tailgate and Unique Steering Wheel, But Not for Europe
Ford Expedition (2025): The hefty Ford that won't be seen in Europe
This American SUV boasts a split tailgate and a distinctive steering wheel
Since Ford has largely withdrawn from the traditional car market, the automaker is channeling more investment into what sells best in America: SUVs and pickups. The Expedition, now launching its fifth generation, stands as Ford's largest family SUV and is introducing several new features for the 2025 model.
This includes optional Tremor off-road gear, an oversized interior screen, and a highly practical split tailgate borrowed from its more upscale sibling, the Lincoln Navigator.

The latest iteration of the Expedition remains predictably massive, retaining much of the footprint of its predecessor. The standard model measures in at a length of 5.33 meters with a 3.11-meter wheelbase. Opt for the larger Expedition Max, and you're looking at an impressive length of 5.63 meters and a wheelbase stretching 3.34 meters. Both versions of this full-size SUV share a width of 2.03 meters, standing at a height of 1.98 meters.
The vehicle isn't suitable for standard German garages, and in any case, there are no plans to ship it to Europe. This decision might be influenced by Ford's recollection of the lackluster sales performance of the US Explorer with a plug-in hybrid in the region.
The vehicle is powered by an EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 405 horsepower and 651 Nm of torque. This engine comes standard in the Active, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels. Ford also provides a high-output version of this engine, which produces 446 horsepower and 691 Nm of torque, included as standard in the rugged Tremor and available as an option in the Platinum model. In both instances, the power is transmitted to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.
While the exterior has undergone an evolutionary change, the interior has seen a revolutionary transformation. The previous vertical tablet design has been replaced with a much sleeker configuration. The introduction of a 24.0-inch widescreen display and a 13.2-inch touchscreen now provides even more screen real estate. There are still a few physical controls, and a new feature is the electrically adjustable center console, which can be retracted by nearly eight centimeters at the push of a button. This is a feature not even the largest GM SUVs possess.
The real highlight of this vehicle is at the back, where the 2025 Expedition comes with a split tailgate capable of supporting up to 227 kilograms, making it perfect for tailgating events. It features an integrated backrest that doubles as a table, and the cargo area is equipped with electrical outlets for charging devices. This clever split gate feature is a standard inclusion across the entire model range and operates electronically.
The Tremor joins the Expedition lineup, boasting 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires and a ground clearance of 10.6 inches. It not only comes equipped with the previously mentioned upgraded engine but also includes protective underbody shielding for the fuel tank, transfer case, and front axle.
Ford introduces side steps influenced by the Raptor, a front skid plate, and a Rock Crawl driving setting. The suspension has been readjusted for off-road use, and an electronic locking differential is featured on the rear axle. You'll also spot several orange highlights, a common design trait shared with other Ford models in the Tremor range.
Without a load-distributing hitch, the Expedition can tow up to 3,175 kilograms. It has a maximum towing capacity of up to 4.35 tons. Depending on the model, the wheel size ranges from 20 inches to a set of 24 inches with 285/40R24 tires.
Ford's Presence in Europe:
The 2025 Expedition is enhanced with Ford's latest hands-free BlueCruise technology for highway driving. This includes a hands-free lane-changing feature that's activated by a simple tap of the turn signal.
Bookings for the latest model will commence on October 24, with Ford dealerships across the US set to welcome the new Expedition come the following spring. Starting prices are set at $61,700, excluding delivery fees (approximately €56,000), marking a $6,000 increase from its predecessor. One can only hope that by then, there will be options besides the oddly shaped steering wheel that comes with it.
