Is Flavio Briatore poised for an exciting comeback to Formula 1 through Alpine, eyeing Adrian Newey?
According to reports, Flavio Briatore is poised for a dramatic comeback to F1, joining forces with Alpine.
Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reports that Renault CEO Luca di Mao has set his sights on enlisting Briatore to aid in revitalizing the team.
The document indicates that Briatore is set to join the organization to serve as a "special supervisor," where his duties won't necessitate continuous engagement with track-related activities.
It is said that he has set his sights on Adrian Newey, aiming to bring him on board in a significant hiring push focused on the team's technical
Briatore has not held a formal role in an F1 squad since 2009, after resigning from his position as head of the Renault team due to the Crashgate controversy.
The individual from Italy presently serves as Fernando Alonso's manager and has frequently been observed at various races throughout the years.
Briatore boasts an impressive background in Formula 1, guiding the Enstone team, Benetton, to championship victories alongside Michael Schumacher in the 1990s.
He subsequently guided Renault, with Alonso at the helm, to consecutive championship victories in 2005 and 2006.
His tenure in Formula 1 concluded after the controversy stemming from Crashgate, where Nelson Piquet Jr., who was then Renault's number two driver, intentionally crashed during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, causing the Safety Car to be deployed.
The maneuvers executed by the Brazilian racer enabled Alonso to move into the first position, ultimately securing the first victory of the season for Renault.
One year after the incident, Briatore faced expulsion from the sport due to his role in the controversy, receiving a permanent ban as a consequence.
This decision was reversed, allowing him to be actively involved in F1 for the past ten years.
Alpine has faced a challenging beginning to the 2024 F1 season.
With only two points accumulated across the first eight races, they find themselves in ninth place in the constructors' standings.
