Ferrari’s Costly Misstep: Mansell Criticizes Decision to Pass on Adrian Newey as Aston Martin Secures F1 Engineering Maestro
Ferrari criticized as "short-sighted" for not accommodating Adrian Newey's requests
"Ferrari is a team I'm very fond of, truly. However, they missed a significant chance by not securing Adrian Newey, as his involvement typically guarantees several successful years."
Nigel Mansell, the 1992 Formula 1 world champion, believes that Ferrari lacked foresight in their efforts to hire Adrian Newey.
Adrian Newey was introduced as the new managing technical partner for Aston Martin last week.
Starting in 2025, Newey will lead Aston Martin’s technical department as Lawrence Stroll aims to elevate the Silverstone-based team to championship success soon.
After news broke in Miami that Newey would be leaving Red Bull, many believed Ferrari was the frontrunner to bring him on board.
It is thought that Ferrari did not want to compete with Aston Martin's proposal and chose not to engage in a "bidding war."
Nigel Mansell, who raced with Ferrari from 1989 to 1990, thinks that the Italian team missed a significant chance during that period.
Mansell shared exclusively with Crash.net and Sportscasting that he believed Ferrari was being short-sighted when they hesitated over Adrian's potential salary.
"I have a deep admiration for Ferrari, but they missed a golden chance. Hiring Adrian Newey practically guarantees several great years ahead. Aston Martin has made an excellent move by bringing him on board."
"I am really excited to see, along with sports enthusiasts globally, how rapidly it becomes prominent."
Mansell firmly believes that Newey’s transition to Aston Martin will invigorate him, anticipating that Newey might achieve something remarkable upon his arrival next year.
He expressed that many might have overlooked the fact that Adrian hadn't been completely satisfied with his last few years at Red Bull. He praised Adrian's exceptional work and suggested that now, being based in the UK with Aston Martin, Adrian might rediscover some enthusiasm and a clearer sense of purpose.
"It's quite alarming for everyone to hear that, especially considering he performs so exceptionally well."
"If he feels at ease, which I believe he does at Aston Martin, keep an eye on him. I think he might achieve something remarkable."
