Fernando Alonso Stresses Team Effort Amid Adrian Newey Rumours as Aston Martin Battles on Track
Fernando Alonso addresses the "rumor" about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that addressing Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement persist.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hint that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Following his departure, he will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors at this point, and I believe that solving the issues isn't the responsibility of just one person,” Alonso mentioned at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and production. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations are implemented.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that extends until the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso came in 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll secured the 19th spot.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they launch a full-scale effort in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our best each weekend.”
"During a weekend as inspiring as this one, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in terms of performance, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind each other. This weekend, I had a slight edge and felt really good with the car, pushing it perhaps beyond its limits. That effort led to a P11 finish today."
"Indeed, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and realize that our major goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that, as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are leading and far ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, it's clear that we need to elevate our performance. We have to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have the opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being last to securing a spot on the podium in just four months, providing a clear example of significant improvement."
"Mercedes had a similar start to us. In the first four races, we were neck and neck with them, yet they’ve already secured three victories this year. I'm not one to make excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the current performance of the car is insufficient and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Fell short in Monza. Disappointing in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I don't believe we'll see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend we earned one point. Today we nearly secured two points, and this is the challenge we face."
