Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumours: ‘One Man Can’t Solve Aston Martin’s Issues
Fernando Alonso Addresses Speculation About Adrian Newey Announcement
Aston Martin Faces Challenges: "I'm not one for making excuses," says Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso believes that solving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than just a single individual, despite ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's signing in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the current Chief Technology Officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the start of next year and will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation has intensified lately that Aston Martin could be his future team, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have subsided.
Alonso stated at Monza that, although there are still just rumors, he believes it isn't solely one person's responsibility to resolve issues.
"It's primarily about our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what is progressing well, what isn't, and work on improving our approach for 2025."
Next year, Newey being available could enable him to manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a crucial edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso’s contract through to the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine in line with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend.”
"An inspiring weekend like this one, from my perspective, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very closely matched, often finishing just two or three seconds apart either ahead or behind each other. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better and felt really good about the car. I pushed it to the limit, perhaps even beyond 100%, which resulted in finishing in P11."
"Yes, it’s disappointing, but we need to remain patient and keep in mind that our ultimate goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team could come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to step up our game. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, “I believe we still have time to make adjustments.”
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. During the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses."
It seems improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current car's performance is insufficient and needs an upgrade to improve.
"Performance was lacking in Monza. It was inadequate in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. We remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
