Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumours as Aston Martin Faces Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amidst Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculations about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might soon reveal their acquisition of Newey.
Adrian Newey, the soon-to-depart chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Rumors have intensified recently about Aston Martin being his upcoming team, while speculation about a potential move to Ferrari has decreased.
At Monza, Alonso stated, "There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not a task for just one person to solve everything."
"It's primarily about our current situation and what we're creating. It's important to recognize what is progressing well and what isn't, and then work towards improving things for 2025."
With Newey being available next year, he could manage the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. The team will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulations.
However, up to that point, the outcomes have been quite discouraging.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re dependent on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"An inspiring weekend, such as the one I'm experiencing, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very close to each other, often just two or three seconds apart. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to its limits, possibly even beyond 100%. As a result, I secured P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso mentioned regarding the car for next year: "I believe we still have sufficient time to make adjustments."
"Within four months, McLaren advanced from being in last place to reaching the podium. This provides us with clear examples."
“Additionally, Mercedes had a similar start to ours. We were on par with Mercedes in the first four races, and they have already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I'm not one for making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the car's current performance is insufficient until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza wasn't satisfactory. The same goes for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team knows what's going on and is giving their all. We're staying united and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that's the challenge we're facing."
