Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors: ‘One Man Can’t Fix Aston Martin’s Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team afterward.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors of him joining Ferrari have diminished.
"There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not the responsibility of a single person to make things right," Alonso remarked at Monza.
"It's really about focusing on our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's progressing positively and what's not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey being available could enable him to manage the 2026 car for a different team, potentially offering them a significant benefit ahead of the new engine regulations.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into developing a new Silverstone facility and securing a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. The company will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they launch a full-scale effort in
“There’s not much we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our all every weekend.”
"This weekend, which has sparked my creativity, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he's ahead or behind. Today was one of those races where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in an 11th place finish."
"Indeed, it's disheartening. We must remain patient and recognize that our primary goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our standards. We must improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, “I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren progressed from the back of the pack to the podium in just four months. This gives us clear evidence."
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. During the first four races, we were on par with Mercedes, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that without an enhancement to the car, the current performance is inadequate.
"Performance in Monza, Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary was subpar."
“I believe that unless we introduce new components, we won’t see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin.”
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team knows what's happening and is giving their all. We're staying together and continuing to strive forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly gained two points, and that's the challenge we face."
