Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors as Aston Martin Struggles Continue: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an imminent announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
Fernando Alonso comments on Aston Martin's difficulties, stating, "I don't like making excuses"
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, as rumors persist about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the addition of Newey to their team in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his upcoming team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso mentioned that the information is still just hearsay and emphasized that it shouldn't be the responsibility of a single individual to resolve the issues.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and ongoing efforts. It's crucial to identify what's progressing positively and what isn't, in order to better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey's availability could enable him to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the new regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured the 11th spot at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 may serve as a preparatory period for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and both Lance and I are making every effort to perform at our best each weekend.
"During a particularly inspired weekend like this one, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he ended up ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it perhaps even beyond its limits. This effort earned me an 11th place finish."
"Certainly, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that the main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those are elite teams and they are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our standards. We need to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to reaching the podium in just four months, providing a clear example of improvement."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were neck and neck with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Hence, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, Aston Martin is not expected to perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating, "Until we get an upgrade for the car, this is the best we can do, and it's simply not sufficient."
"Performance at Monza wasn't satisfactory. It also fell short in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, there won't be any significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"This is the strategy. The team knows what's going on. Everyone is giving it their all. So yes, we stay together. We keep striving. Last weekend we earned one point. Today we nearly got two points, and that's the challenge we face."
