Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Struggles at Aston Martin: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
"I'm not one for making excuses," Fernando Alonso comments as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. Once he steps down, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso remarked, "There are still just rumors, and I believe that resolving issues isn't solely the responsibility of one individual."
"It's really about our current situation and what we're creating. It's important to identify what's progressing positively, what isn't, and to aim for better preparation for 2025."
Next year, Newey will be available to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, which could provide them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into developing a new facility at Silverstone and securing a contract with Alonso that extends through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulatory standards.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin to launch a full-scale effort in 202
“We’re powerless,” Alonso commented. “We rely on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in maximum effort each weekend.”
"A weekend filled with inspiration, much like this one I'm experiencing, I am certain will remain entirely unknown."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently been very close to each other, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, with one of us always slightly ahead or behind. This weekend was one where I performed a bit better. I felt good about the car and pushed it possibly beyond its limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
“However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are leading and significantly ahead of us.”
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to step up our game. We need to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, saying, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium in just four months, providing clear evidence of their progress."
“Similarly, Mercedes began the season on an equal footing with us. We matched their performance in the first four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is insufficient until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance at Monza was lacking. The results at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also unsatisfactory."
Therefore, unless we introduce new components, I don't foresee significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin.
"That's the strategy. The team is informed about the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So, yes, we remain united and continue to strive. Last weekend we secured one point. Today, we nearly gained two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
