Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘No Excuses
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't believe in making excuses," Fernando Alonso comments amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just the efforts of a single individual, despite ongoing rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Sources at the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix have hinted that Aston Martin might reveal their signing of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. At that time, he will be able to begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his next team has intensified lately, while rumors of him joining Ferrari have diminished.
During a press event at Monza, Alonso commented, "There are still just rumors at this point, and I believe that resolving these issues isn't solely one person's responsibility."
"It's really about assessing our current situation and production. We need to identify what's working well, what's not, and make plans to improve things for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulatory changes.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite discouraging.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. During the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured an 11th place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"During one particularly inspiring weekend, I am certain that my contributions will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races just a couple of seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it to its limits, perhaps even beyond. As a result, I secured 11th place."
"Absolutely, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top four spot. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"Being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means it's time for us to step up our game. We need to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a spot on the podium in just four months. This is a clear demonstration."
"Mercedes began their season just like we did. We were on par with them for the initial four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the current performance of the car is inadequate until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance was lacking in Monza. It was subpar in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"Therefore, significant changes are unlikely in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. We're staying together and continuing to strive forward. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly gained two points, and that's the challenge we'll keep fighting."
