Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't like making excuses," Fernando Alonso comments amid Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as speculation persists about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Speculations emerging from the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of next year. After his departure, he will be able to join and work for a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him potentially joining Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a move to Ferrari have diminished.
During a conversation at Monza, Alonso mentioned that the information circulating is still just speculation and emphasized that the responsibility to resolve issues doesn't fall on a single individual.
"It’s about focusing on our current situation and production. We need to identify what’s working well and what isn’t, and then plan for a better 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, potentially offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a new deal with Alonso, keeping him on the team until the close of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re dependent on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"This weekend, I'm feeling inspired. I know it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently been very close in races, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, whether he's in front or behind. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to perhaps more than 100% of its capacity, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull at this point, we really need to elevate our performance. Improvement is essential."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to reaching the podium in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Moreover, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were on par with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not inclined to make excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see any progress in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current performance of the car won't improve until it receives an upgrade, and that the current state is insufficient.
"Performance in Monza, Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary was subpar."
"In my opinion, significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands what's going on and is putting in maximum effort. We remain united and continue to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points. This will be our ongoing challenge."
