Fernando Alonso Refutes Adrian Newey Rumors: ‘More Than Just One Man Needed’ Amid Aston Martin Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
Fernando Alonso states, "I don't like making excuses," as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, despite ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who currently holds the position of chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his role early next year. At that time, he will have the opportunity to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Whispers about his potential move to Aston Martin have become louder recently, while speculation about him joining Ferrari has diminished.
During an event at Monza, Alonso commented, "There are still just rumors, and I believe that resolving the issues isn't solely one person's responsibility."
"It's more about our current status and production. It's about recognizing what's progressing well, what's not, and making better preparations for 2025."
Next year, Newey could be available to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations start.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso extending through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory period for Aston Martin, paving the way for a more aggressive approach
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our all each weekend.”
A weekend filled with inspiration, just like this one for me, will remain entirely anonymous.
Lance and I have been neck and neck this year, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, either just ahead or just behind each other. This weekend, I had a slight edge and felt really good about the car. I pushed it to the limit, maybe even beyond, and ended up in P11.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to stay patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"We're currently trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, so it's clear we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is essential."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“McLaren progressed from being at the bottom to securing a podium finish in just four months. This is a clear indication.”
"Furthermore, Mercedes began the season just like we did. During the first four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed frustration, saying that the current performance of the car is insufficient until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance fell short at Monza. It wasn't satisfactory at Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"In my opinion, there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we stay together. We keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that's the fight we're in."
