Fernando Alonso Downplays Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘It’s Not Just One Man’s Job
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an upcoming announcement involving Adrian Newey
"I don’t believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggested that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, allowing him to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
During an interview at Monza, Alonso commented, "Right now, it's just speculation, and I believe resolving the issues isn't a task for just one person."
"It's really about our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's progressing well, what's not, and work on improving things for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, driver Fernando Alonso secured an 11th place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory phase for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We are reliant on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"A weekend filled with inspiration, similar to the one I'm experiencing, is sure to remain entirely unnoticed."
“This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very close to each other, often within two or three seconds apart. Today was another one of those weekends where I had a slight edge. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps even beyond its limits, which ultimately secured me P11.”
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to remain patient and recognize that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"Being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull now means we have to step up our game. We need to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium within four months, demonstrating clear progress."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. At the start, we were on par with them for the initial four races. Now, they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
It is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying, "Until the car gets an upgrade, this is the best we can do, and it's just not sufficient."
"Performance at Monza fell short. The same can be said for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"Our strategy is set. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We're staying together and continuing to drive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point, and today we nearly secured two points. This will be our ongoing challenge."
