Fernando Alonso Dismisses ‘Rumour’ of Adrian Newey Signing as Aston Martin’s Struggles Persist: ‘Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, amid ongoing rumors about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Sources from the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin may reveal the acquisition of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of next year. After his departure, he will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him potentially moving to Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a possible switch to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are still just speculations and emphasized that resolving the issues is not the responsibility of a single person.
The focus is on our current situation and what we are creating. It's about recognizing what's progressing well and what's not, and making efforts to better prepare for 2025.
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could supervise the 2026 car design for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into force.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into constructing a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that lasts until the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulatory changes.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th position.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory phase for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our best every weekend.”
"An inspired weekend like the one I'm experiencing now, I realize, will remain entirely unknown to others."
"This year, Lance and I have often finished races within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. This weekend, I managed to perform a bit better, feeling very confident with the car and pushing it to its limits, perhaps even beyond. As a result, I secured P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are among the elite and are significantly ahead of us."
"Being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to up our game. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating: “I believe we still have sufficient time to make adjustments.”
"McLaren went from being in last place to earning a spot on the podium in just four months, providing clear evidence of their progress."
"Additionally, Mercedes had the same beginning as we did. In the first four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that without improvements to the car, their current performance is insufficient.
"Performance in Monza was subpar. The results weren't satisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"I don't expect significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So yes, we remain together and continue to strive. Last weekend we secured one point. Today, we nearly got two, and that's the challenge we'll face."
