Fernando Alonso Dismisses Newey Rumours, Calls for Team Effort to Revive Aston Martin’s Fortunes
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin may soon reveal they have signed Newey.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be at liberty to join another Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin will be his next team has intensified recently, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso commented at Monza that the information is still just speculation and emphasized that solving the issues isn't the responsibility of just one individual.
"It's mainly about what we currently possess and what we are generating. It's important to recognize what's progressing well, what's not, and strive to make 2025 better prepared."
Next year, Newey's availability could enable him to manage the development of the 2026 car for a different team, which might offer them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth and preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
“I have a feeling that this weekend, just like this one, will pass by without anyone noticing.”
“This year, Lance and I have often finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits, which earned me 11th place.”
"Yes, I'm disappointed. We must remain patient and recognize that our primary goal is 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"We find ourselves trailing behind teams like Williams, Haas, and Red Bull now. It's clear that we need to step up our game and make improvements."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have the opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being last to securing a podium finish in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
“Mercedes had a similar beginning to us. During the initial four races, we were on par with them, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car’s current performance isn’t satisfactory and won’t improve until it gets an upgrade.
"Performance at Monza fell short. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also lacking."
"So I believe there won't be significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
“This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united. We keep striving. Last weekend we earned one point. Today we nearly got two points, and that is the challenge we face.”
