Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Urges Comprehensive Solutions for Aston Martin’s Struggles
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amidst Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the recruitment of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, will leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be available to join and begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso remarked, "There are still just rumors, and I believe that solving the issues isn't the responsibility of just one person."
"It's more about what we currently possess and what we're generating. It's important to recognize what's working well, what's not, and to use that knowledge to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could supervise the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"An inspired weekend, much like the one I'm experiencing, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in terms of our race finishes, often just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind each other. This weekend was one of those instances where I performed slightly better. I felt really good about the car and pushed it, perhaps even beyond its limits, which resulted in finishing in P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to step up our game. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a spot on the podium in just four months, demonstrating a clear example of significant improvement."
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. We matched their performance in the first four races, yet they have already claimed victory in three races this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will see any progress in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating, "I believe that unless we improve the car, this performance is insufficient."
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It wasn't up to par in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances and is putting in maximum effort. We remain united and determined. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly earned two points, and this will be our ongoing challenge."
