Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Urges Comprehensive Solution for Aston Martin’s Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, despite ongoing speculation connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Insiders at the F1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza hinted that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who currently serves as Red Bull's chief technology officer, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation has intensified lately about Aston Martin potentially being his next stop, while rumors of a move to Ferrari have subsided.
“There are still just rumors, and I believe that resolving the issues isn't solely one person's responsibility,” Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's largely about our current situation and our ongoing efforts. It's crucial to identify what's progressing well and what's not, and to use that knowledge to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th position, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our best every weekend.”
"During a particularly inspiring weekend like this one, I am certain it will remain completely anonymous."
"Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently been very close, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling satisfied with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, we're disappointed, but patience is essential. It's important to recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"Being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the vehicle for next year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to respond."
"McLaren advanced from being in the last position to securing a spot on the podium within a span of four months. This serves as a clear example
“Mercedes had a similar start to us. We were on par with them for the initial four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't appreciate making excuses.”
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will see any advancement in performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car won't improve until it gets an upgrade, and it's simply not up to par.
"Performance at Monza wasn't satisfactory. The same goes for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their maximum effort. So yes, we remain unified. We continue to strive. Last weekend we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that is the challenge we face."
