Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Calls for Comprehensive Team Effort as Aston Martin Struggles
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than just a single individual, while Adrian Newey remains a potential candidate.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the acquisition of Newey in the near future.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, will leave his position early next year and will then be eligible to join another Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his next team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso commented at Monza, saying, "There are still just rumors, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to make things right."
"It's about focusing on our current situation and production. We need to recognize what's working, identify what's not, and make improvements to better prepare for 2025."
Next year, Newey's availability could enable him to supervise the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge as the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract extension for Alonso that lasts until the end of 2026. They are also teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso commented. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"During a particularly inspired weekend like this one, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend was one of those times when I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to its limits, possibly even beyond 100%. As a result, I finished in P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and recognize that the main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"We need to improve our performance since we're currently trailing behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make changes."
"McLaren progressed from being in last place to securing a podium finish within a span of four months. Thus, we have evident instances."
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were neck and neck with them, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the current state of the car isn't satisfactory and won't improve until an upgrade is made.
"Below par in Monza. Subpar performances in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“I believe there won’t be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components.”
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united. We keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that will be our challenge."
