Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Calls for Collective Effort to Lift Aston Martin’s Performance
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
Fernando Alonso states, "I don't like making excuses," amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
There were rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix that Aston Martin might reveal their new signing of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the start of the next year. After his departure, he will have the freedom to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him possibly moving to Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential switch to Ferrari have diminished.
"There's still just speculation, and I believe it's not solely the responsibility of one person to address the issues," Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's mostly about our current situation and what we're creating. It's important to recognize what's progressing well and what isn't, so that we can better prepare for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso extending until the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured an 11th place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin in preparation for a major push in 202
In response, Alonso said, "There's nothing we can do. We rely on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost each weekend."
"An exciting weekend like this one is going to stay entirely under the radar, I can tell."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently been very close, often finishing just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to the limit, maybe even beyond what was reasonable, which resulted in finishing P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to stay patient and remember that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must improve our performance. We need to elevate our standards."
Alonso mentioned regarding the car for the upcoming year, "I believe we still have sufficient time to make adjustments."
"Over a span of four months, McLaren advanced from the last position to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear illustration."
“Mercedes began their season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were neck and neck, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t buy into excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the current state of the car isn't sufficient and won't improve until it gets an upgrade.
"Performance at Monza was lacking. The results at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also unsatisfactory."
"I don't anticipate significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. They're giving it their all. So yes, we remain united. We keep striving. Last weekend we earned one point. Today we were nearly at two points, and that's the fight we face."
