Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours, Calls for Broader Team Effort to Revive Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso Responds to Speculation About Adrian Newey Announcement This Week
"I don't like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Sources at the Monza circuit during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicated that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, plans to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso mentioned that the information is still just hearsay and emphasized that resolving the issues is not solely the responsibility of one individual.
"It's really about assessing our current situation and outputs. We need to identify what is progressing correctly, what isn't, and work towards better preparation for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could take charge of developing the 2026 car for a different team, potentially providing them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a more aggressive approach
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We rely on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"During a weekend that sparks creativity like this one, I am certain that my contributions will remain entirely unidentified."
"This year, Lance and I have often been very close in races, finishing just two or three seconds apart, whether one of us is ahead or behind. This weekend, I had a slight edge, felt good about the car, and pushed myself perhaps beyond my limits, which resulted in finishing P11."
"Yes, it’s disappointing. We need to stay patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to improve our performance. We must elevate our standards."
Regarding the car for next year, Alonso mentioned, "I believe we still have ample time to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from being in last place to reaching the podium within four months. This serves as a clear example.
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t support making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see better results in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car wouldn't improve until it gets an upgrade, and that the current performance was unacceptable.
"Subpar performance in Monza. Below expectations in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So, yes, we remain united. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we secured one point. Today, we nearly achieved two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
