Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours as Aston Martin’s Struggles Continue
Fernando Alonso Addresses Speculation of Adrian Newey Announcement
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amidst Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, despite ongoing rumors about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Sources inside the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Whispers suggesting that Aston Martin could be his upcoming team have intensified lately, while speculation about a possible move to Ferrari has diminished.
During an interview at Monza, Alonso mentioned that the information remains speculative and emphasized that resolving the issues isn't solely the responsibility of one person.
"It's about assessing our current situation and our output. We need to identify what is progressing positively and what isn't, so we can better prepare for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, potentially offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends to the conclusion of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Fernando Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin ahead of their full-fledged efforts in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"A weekend filled with inspiration, much like this one for me, will be entirely unknown to others."
"Throughout this year, Lance and I have had very close finishes, often just two or three seconds apart by the end of the race, whether he’s ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in finishing at P11."
"Absolutely, it's disheartening. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are leading significantly ahead of us."
"Being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must improve. We need to elevate our performance."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
“Within four months, McLaren progressed from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example.
“Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car needs an upgrade because its current performance is unsatisfactory.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we're staying united and continuing to push forward. We earned one point last weekend, and today we nearly got two points. This will be our ongoing challenge."
