Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours Amidst Aston Martin Struggles: ‘More Than Just One Man Needed to Fix Things
Fernando Alonso Responds to Speculation About Adrian Newey Announcement
"I'm not one to make excuses," Fernando Alonso comments amid Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just the involvement of a single individual, despite ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hint that Aston Martin might reveal the addition of Newey to their team in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, after which he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Rumors suggesting that Aston Martin could be his upcoming team have intensified lately, while speculation about a potential move to Ferrari has diminished.
At Monza, Alonso commented that the information circulating is still just rumors and stressed that it isn't solely one person's responsibility to resolve the issues.
"It's really about assessing our current situation and production. We need to identify what is working well, what isn't, and then strategize for a better outcome in 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could manage the creation of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a crucial edge when the new engine regulations are implemented.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot while his teammate, Lance Stroll, came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a phase of growth for Aston Martin before they make a major push in 202
Alonso responded by saying, "There's nothing we can do. We're reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend."
"An inspiring weekend like this one, from my perspective, I’m certain will remain completely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it possibly beyond its limits, which resulted in me finishing in P11."
"Indeed, it's disappointing. We must exercise patience and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that, as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, currently being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to respond."
"In a span of four months, McLaren went from being at the bottom to securing a spot on the podium. This provides us with clear examples."
"Mercedes began the season just like we did. We were on par with them for the initial four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car's current performance is lacking and won't improve until it gets an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was subpar. It was lacking in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary as well."
"I believe that without introducing new components, we won't see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team knows what's going on and is giving their all. We stay together and keep striving. We earned one point last weekend and nearly secured two points today. This is the fight we're in."
