Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours Amidst Aston Martin Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso Addresses Speculation About Adrian Newey's Potential Announcement This Week
"I'm not one to make excuses," Fernando Alonso comments amid Aston Martin's difficulties.
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, even as rumors persist about Adrian Newey's potential involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggested that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin could be his future team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
During an interview at Monza, Alonso mentioned that the information is still just speculation and emphasized that it’s not solely one person's responsibility to resolve the issues.
"It's really about evaluating our current situation and output. We need to identify what's working well and what isn't, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations start.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been rather disappointing.
Aston Martin is currently in fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory phase for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
Alonso responded by saying, "There's nothing we can do. We're relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost each weekend."
“During a weekend like this, filled with inspiration, I am certain that my contributions will remain entirely anonymous.
"This season, Lance and I have often finished races within a two or three-second gap, either just ahead or behind each other. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt comfortable with the car and pushed it to its limits, possibly even beyond, which resulted in me finishing in P11."
"Of course, it's frustrating. We have to stay patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, currently being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and RB, we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a podium spot within four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the initial four races, we were at the same level as Mercedes, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't support making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the current state of the car is insufficient and improvements are needed.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I don't believe there will be significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is in place. The team knows what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. So, yes, we stay together. We keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost got two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
