Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin’s Ongoing Struggles: ‘We Need More Than One Man
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges.
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just the efforts of a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating at the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is stepping down from his role as the chief technology officer at Red Bull, will leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified recently, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso mentioned at Monza that there are still just rumors and that resolving the issues isn't the responsibility of a single person.
"It's really about looking at our current situation and production. We need to identify what's working well, what's not, and how we can better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the development of a 2026 car for a different team, which might provide them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations are introduced.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a brand-new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that extends through the end of 2026. They are also collaborating with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the forthcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended the race in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
"There isn't anything we can do," Alonso responded. "Honestly, it's up to our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend."
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one, I’m certain it will remain entirely unnoticed."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have often finished races very close to each other, usually within two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it to its limits, possibly even beyond 100%. That effort earned me an 11th place finish.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"Being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and RB means it's time for us to step up our game. We have to improve."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from being the worst team to securing a podium finish in just four months. This is a clear example.”
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current car's performance is inadequate and will remain so until an upgrade is made.
"Performance in Monza was subpar. The same can be said for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I don't anticipate significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That’s the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united. We continue to persevere. Last weekend we secured one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that’s the challenge we face."
