Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles, Calls for Team-Wide Effort
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I don’t like making excuses," Fernando Alonso comments as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, amid ongoing speculations about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, will leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that his next move might be to Aston Martin has intensified recently, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are still just speculations, and he believes that solving the issues isn't solely one person's responsibility.
"It's about what we currently possess and what we are generating. We need to comprehend what is progressing correctly, what is not, and make efforts to better prepare for 2025."
The opportunity for Newey to be available next year means he could supervise the 2026 vehicle for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations start.
Aston Martin has significantly funded a new facility in Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the new regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th position, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, similar to this one, I am certain that it will remain entirely confidential."
“Throughout this year, Lance and I have often finished races very close to each other, usually just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it perhaps more than I should have, resulting in an eleventh-place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and realize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull is a clear sign that we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"Within a span of four months, McLaren went from being at the bottom to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the first four races, we were neck and neck with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current performance is inadequate and won't improve until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It was also unsatisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, significant changes are unlikely to occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united. We continue to strive. Last weekend we earned one point. Today we nearly secured two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
