Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumors as Aston Martin Faces Uphill Battle
Fernando Alonso addresses "rumor" about Adrian Newey announcement this week
Fernando Alonso states he doesn't believe in making excuses amid Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicated that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's signing in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is stepping down as Red Bull's chief technology officer, is set to leave his role early next year and will then be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin could be his future team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are still just speculations and emphasized that resolving the issues isn't the responsibility of a single person.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and the things we're creating. We need to identify what's working well and what's not, and then make improvements to be better prepared for 2025."
Next year, Newey’s availability could enable him to supervise the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso that lasts until the end of 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin is currently ranked fifth in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured an 11th place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll crossed the line in 19th position.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
"There’s nothing we can do," Alonso responded. "We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend."
"During an inspired weekend like this, I am confident that my involvement will remain entirely unnoticed."
"This season, Lance and I have been quite close in performance, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart, whether he's ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better, feeling confident with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits, which earned me a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to be patient and realize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull is unacceptable. We must elevate our performance and improve significantly."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments."
"Over the span of four months, McLaren advanced from the bottom of the standings to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear
Mercedes had the same starting point as us. We were on equal footing with them for the initial four races, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not inclined to make excuses.
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current state is insufficient and won't improve until it gets an upgrade.
"Performance at Monza was lacking. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also unsatisfactory."
"I don't anticipate significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
