Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘More Than One Man Needed to Fix Things
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I'm not one for making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties.
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the recruitment of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Recently, speculation has intensified that Aston Martin could be his next team, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors circulating, and I believe it’s not a task for a single person to resolve,” Alonso mentioned at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we are creating. We need to identify what's progressing positively, what's not, and work on improving things for 2025."
Newey being free next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and has signed a contract with Alonso that extends through the end of 2026. They are also teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulatory standards.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th place, while his teammate, Lance Stroll, finished in the 19th position.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth and preparation for Aston Martin ahead of their major efforts in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our best each weekend.”
"During a particularly inspiring weekend like this one, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close, often finishing the race just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind each other. This weekend was one of those times where I performed slightly better. I felt great with the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which earned me an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We need to be patient and recognize that our main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we have to elevate our performance. We need to improve."
Regarding next year’s car, Alonso remarked, “I believe we still have time to respond.”
"McLaren went from last place to standing on the podium in just four months, providing a clear example."
"Mercedes began the season on par with us. We matched their performance in the first four races, but they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is insufficient and improvements are necessary.
"Underwhelming performance in Monza, disappointing results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That's the strategy. The team knows what's going on. They're giving it their all. So yes, we're staying together and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that's the challenge we're facing."
